Robert McMillen is a seasoned Process Safety Management professional with over 20years of experience enhancing process safety, operational efficiency, and capital project management across the oil & gas, agriculture, explosives, and specialty chemical industries. With a foundation in mechanical engineering and a career built on real-world execution; from implementing PSM programs to managing major plant projects and supporting plant engineering. Robert brings a rare blend of technical depth, regulatory expertise, and business insight to every engagement.
Robert founded McMillen Process Safety to share the decades of experience he’s gained and do his part to help companies control hazards and contain chemicals. He believes strong process safety doesn’t just protect plants, it protects people. Safe operations keep employees working, families supported, and communities thriving for future generations. For Robert, the best process safety outcomes are the simplest ones: nothing bad happens in the field. His mission is to help educate, build and execute Process Safety Management programs that keep our “gorillas” caged. We do it through leadership, disciplined execution, and a commitment to believing in the value of PSM.
His career has taken him from a mile underground in explosives operations to production plant instrumentation and controls support, division-level capital project delivery, and corporate PSM leadership. He has facilitated countless PHAs, led dozens of compliance audits, and developed training programs that enhance organizations shift from a mindset of compliance only to one of committed Process Safety culture. He has built, simplified, and rolled out usable process safety programs designed for real-world conditions. Robert’s approach is grounded in simplicity and practicality, every procedure, tool, and system must be understandable, usable, and effective for the teams doing the work.
